"Windy Wellington" she was indeed today and with some impressive rain. But we only got a brush with the edge of the cyclone, although our Go Bags - with supplies for the cats, too - have been ready to go. Much more damage has been done at the top of the North Island, which got it head on, unfortunately. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this has been the worst storm New Zealand has had since 1988 by a long shot. After a day of watching news and reading updates and checking in on friends, it's finally time to zonk out. Thanks for thinking of us! 'Night all, and keep safe.

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. The only good thing about wind afterward... at least here in Michigan... the wind dries things up quickly; but the damage it does to weakened trees, lines, etc. is not always a good tradeoff. TAKE CARE!

I'd heard Auckland and that region got it the worst, but hadn't seen images yet. Keeping all of those affected in my thoughts.

really started rolling out yesterday as comms have been down in a lot of communities - Wairoa's still largely dark, although I think a single satellite phone is now operating from there. Flooding to the east has been just jaw-dropping, on top of the damage that's been done in Northland and Auckland. A new evacuation order went out in (I think) central Napier this morning. Friends in Hawke's Bay are reporting damage to their houses, but nothing critical (like a roof). Others in Auckland have come through OK too, thankfully. Taranaki came out of it largely unscathed with just power outages and trees down. Although the sheer noise of the gale-force winds overnight Monday/Tuesday was incredible - granted, my house is exposed to the wind, but that storm was still scary.

A panel from my neighbour's fence ended up in my garden but other than that, no damage at my place. I kept power and internet throughout too, unlike many of my colleagues (bit of an issue as we had an order to WFH yesterday rather than risk driving into the office). Today it's a settled, blue-sky day here on the west coast - as if a cyclone never roared through yesterday.

The damage from the flooding is horrible, so many homes and so much infrastructure damaged. And after having just been through a bout of flooding! Prayers for those dealing with this to be able to get all the support they need.

We got the tiny tail of Gabrielle today, bringing some much needed rain.My sister is fine in Auckland - the worst flooding was 2 weeks ago for her. My Aunty's partner has a home in one of the worst hit areas (Muriwai). Thankfully he was at her place further inland and they are both fine. We don't know if his house still exists.

in those aerial shots that a lot of the properties are single-storey, so there isn't any upstairs to retreat to in case of emergency. Very frightening. It's going to take a while to put things right after that level of damage.

6.3, considered Strong, off the coast north of Wellington. The cat sat up smartly, Husband and I looked at each other as the house swayed. He checked outside for landslips. All clear. The folks up north and on the east coast certainly don't need a quake now. Water-soaked ground plus a strong quake is never a great combo. https://www.stuff.co.nz/...nitude-63-earthquake So far so good still, but how many Biblical plagues were there? Seven? The hiking shoes, rain jackets and Go Bags are next to the bed, cat crates at the ready. At least we don't have to worry about snakes. Nighty night! Sleep tight. No bed bugs, all right?!
