Birthday mathoms!
|
Can't Post

|
A birthday for Ro comes today; Instead of a-sending bouquets, She wanted to share These mathoms; beware! Her thoughts are in full disarray. *snert* First, the Tolkien-related mathom. I have a wee little book called “A Tolkien Treasury”, with little poems and quotations and such (including a few recipes!). Not sure how trustworthy the quotations are (who is Colin Wilson and why is he quoted so much?), but some of the poems are cute; here’s five haiku and something else. Darkness wore a cloak; Wrapping for a pale rider Astride a black horse. --Nazgûl Moon-silver beauty; Soft song bringing ancient tears To the Elven lords. --Lúthien Tinúviel Tall, straight, leather-hard; Blood of past and future kings, With a broken sword. -- Aragorn Snowy brows, blue eyes; A flash of fire and thunder-- The old grey pilgrim. --Gandalf Beneath the black crown; Red, in a skull of blue fire, The eye burns with hate. --Sauron O, Saron made some Rings, they were very useful things And he only wanted One to keep But Isildur took the One just to have a little fun. Sauron’s finger was inside it, what a creep! (Translated from “The Orc’s Marching Song”, apparently -- and if anyone can tell me what song that is, I’ll be impressed. ) Trivia: NZS and I between us have five copies of The Lord of the Rings (three single volume, two multi-volume sets), and about 111 inches (over 9 feet) of shelf space for books by and related to Tolkien -- at home, plus several more feet at NZS’s work. NZS is slightly offended that I’m not including in that figure the space (at home) devoted to Old English, Middle English, Old Norse, Old German, Old High German, Middle High German, and Old Saxon (he argues those works are Tolkien’s source material), but I think that’s pushing it. C’mon, who’s geeky enough to admit how much shelf space their collection takes up? My best “mathom” was last year’s offering; so here’s some recent pictures. First, a few I posted a while back of NZ Toddler around his first birthday. And then a couple more: And if you’ve read this far, I have an Announcement. NZ Toddler is expecting a new brother or sister in October! Okay, so maybe he’s not expecting it yet, but his parents are. :-)

And many, many congratulations. At home in the UK my Tolkien collection fills two shelves, each about 1m long - one of the shelves is double-stacked with paperbacks and the other one is single-stacked with hardbacks. That normally includes three copies of LOTR, except one of them is here with me in Wellington!

Now THAT's an untoppable mathom - er, I don't mean the poems, although they're great (I love the Gandalf one especially); no, I mean the news that Eldarion II is on the way! AND the pics of the future big brother, of course. Congratulations to the three of you! After a quick measurement, it looks like I've just shy of a meter's worth of Tolkien-related books, including three volumes of LotR (2nd ed. hardcovers, the 50th anniversary edition, and a set of the good old paperbacks given me by a special friend ). And a "Sir Gawain" edited by these guys named Tolkien and Gordon. Not too shabby - but I know there are others out there who have much larger collections!

I hope you had a great day:). Now that is a cute healthy rascal:).
"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world." Tolkien and C.S. Two birth-day announcements in one! Great to hear that there'll be even more of your lovely family. I'll try and will some sunshine your way to celebrate. We have a mere three copies of LOTR, but in my "defence" they're all ones we bought together. 1. An ancient paperback set, bought when I was 16 2. The one-volume and three-volume Alan Lee-illustrated sets (hardback). I'm not sure how much shelf space our Tolkien works take all together, as the shelves are in two different houses. About a metre all up, perhaps.

Happy Birthday, my friend, and hearty congratulations on the addition to the Telcontar family. I NEED to get to NZ. I'm trying, but my family keeps getting in the way and sucking up all my vacation time. Plus the new condo which sucks up every available dollar. But I'm really working on it. Happiest of birthdays to you, and give that husband and son of your special hugs from me. I love the video you sent me - it's great to hear your voice and see your life in NZ.

There wasa guy in the funny papers who was a stay-at-home dad, and was trying out a pedometer. His wife came home from work and wondered how he could possibly have taken 50,000 steps that day. But I can believe that chasing two little kids around could rack up the miles. You're going to be in great shape with two munchkins to run after! Thanks for the haikus, but mostly for the great photos. Keep 'em coming!
