First Lord of the Rings reading experience:
An enthusiastic teacher had us read The Hobbit at school when I was maybe 11 years old.
I quickly progressed to Lord of the Rings. Feeling that I'd thereby hit the mother-lode, I relocated to Middle-earth from Alan Garner's "the Edge", and gave back the key to the Narnian wardrobe. I think I'd also become "old and wary enough to detect [allegory's] presence": and the sense of thumping allegory has put me off C S Lewis ever since....
