Strangely my introduction to Tolkien, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings was through the Super Nintendo game based on The Fellowship of the Ring, when I was about 12 years of age.
I can't remember how but afterwards I ended up borrowing The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring to read from a girl in my class, so I of course read The Hobbit first as she told me it was the first written.
Reading Lord of the Rings changed my life because it greatly increased my reading ability which, while good at that age, needed improving.
I am now on my sixth read of The Lord of the Rings, which I want to read every year for the rest of my life, as Christopher Lee has done. I re-read The Hobbit last year for the first time since I was 12 and finally managed to sit through The Silmarillion for the first time, and I aim to read through it again as well.
