First Lord of the Rings reading experience: I was a young boy in elementary school and a voracious reader. I read the Hobbit and needed more of Middle Earth. I devoured the Lord of the Rings trilogy and continued to read the appendices in hopes of fleshing out the world even more in my mind. Given how short many books are for kids, it was one of my first experiences with longer novels and series. I can't recall how many times I've read the trilogy now. =)
Favorite Tolkien character: Just one? That's tough. It's hard for me to choose between Aragorn, Samwise, and Gandalf. I suppose I'd have to go with Gandalf because as a kid, I always wanted to be him. To have that wealth of knowledge and wisdom and stand up against overwhelming odds. He has so many dimensions to his character that make him so appealing. And while he wields so much power, he still allows others to fight for themselves and make their own decisions instead of trying to do everything himself. Besides, who doesn't like the idea of wielding a gnarled staff of awesomeness and being able to use magic!? ;)
