That's one of my favorite movies. I personally think that it's underrated. It's an excellent movie indeed! And with that, here's another good quote:

K, ps was on at our cottage this long weekend...didn't see all of it, but heard most of it. Didn't like it. Just not my cup of tea, slow and well.....a 'chick-flick'. Didn't like it. Ireland was nice though!
Sweeny Todd - more and more I am seeing Johnny Depp films. I have to admit, the guy is pretty damn good at his craft. I also enjoy Tim Burton movies quite a bit. Mr. Rickman is also one of my favs and can do no wrong! And I find Helena Bonham Carter quite attractive, not to mention I enjoy her as an actor. So, having said all that, all in all, I liked this movie! Classic tradedy feel for me, almost Shakespearean. It is a musical for those who don't know, but is easy to follow. This is yet another movie for me that has such a European feel to it, as its based in England! So I really, really enjoy those types of movies these days and this movie was great for me. Quite dark of course being a Burton movie and it is about a serial killer. I definitely would give it a thumbs up.
As for Spidey, well, it's good, I'm a huge fan of the genre so I'm a little biased. But is probably my least fav of the trilogy, but a good one nonetheless. Just some goofiness that I thought could have been done differently, when Parker is being affected by the alien symbiote (sp?).
This one rocked. Quite good, cut very well. Only problem was it was someone's bootleg copy filmed by a hand-held in a theatre, so we ended up missing some scenes. Don't know if someone got in front of the camera or the batteries ran out or what. But we ended up seeing most of it. I am definitely going to see it in it's entirety eventually. Based on a true story in Europe, big bank job.

I think it's been out for a few months, but it just came to my local theater, and when greendragon arrived on Tuesday we walked around the corner to see it. Twenty-One is a movie based on the book "Bringing Down the House", a story about a bunch of MIT students who figured out a way to beat the casinos at black-jack by counting cards. Card-counting is legal, but the casinos have a right to bar you from their facility if they catch you doing it.
I'll let greendragon give her impressions if she visits here. While I liked the story, I didn't like all the Hollywood cliches that were shoe-horned into an interesting story. These kids did some amazing things, but their achievement was cluttered by the inane add-ons. I'm now reading the book (Corvar lent it to us), and all the silly stuff that obscured the movie is gone, thankfully. There's no geeky kid who turned his back on his friends to fall under the spell of money and the glitter of Las Vegas, only to return to them when everything falls apart. There isn't an eager pre-med student, who desperately needs a scholarship to go to medical school, and tells an amazing story to the scholarship sponsor. There isn't a nerdy white kid who grows increasingly handsome as the story progresses and wins the heart of the most beautiful girl who never went to MIT. There isn't the battle between the existing high-roller and the upstart who can barely shuffle cards, with the upstart unsurprisingly coming out on top. There isn't the alternately paternal/unforgiving teacher who brings the geeky kid into the action, only to threaten his graduation when the geek decides to stage a coup. There isn't the old-fashioned security team for the casino, who are losing clients to the new technology, but somehow manage to pull off the final "get" by capturing the main character and setting up a double-cross.
I understand there's a second book, which I will definitely read once I finish this one.

...on its cliché-ridden trailer, before returning to see the whole film, which he felt was even worse than the preview promised. That came up in a discussion here on the quality of the LotR trailers (to which I heartily recommend Darkstone's thorough response).

I saw this docu / drama a few years back about these kids and their professor and their story. It was on some channel like A&E or some cable thing that makes this type of film. They interview the real people involved and then show the high-drama moments by recreating them with comments from the subjects. I quite enjoyed it. I also wanted to play blackjack a lot.

I tend to like "true" stories and I like the intensity Jason Statham brings to roles where he acts more than he fights. There sure is some gratuitious naughty scenes though, as if to prove how "R" rated they are. I found that a puzzle.
