Lots of fans [In reply to] Can't Post

...think of LotR as one big film, so the Academy's reluctance on those grounds is perfectly defensible (not that FotR was the best movie of 2001, anyway, but that's a different point).

We're discussing The Lord of the Rings in the Reading Room, Oct. 15, 2007 - Mar. 22, 2009!

I also think of it as one big film, however... [In reply to] Can't Post

each film had to be awarded according to its own merits, hence the noms Fellowship and TTT got. Otherwise, why take up the space from other deserving movies? The Academy really had to think outside the box in several ways for this set of films--I just disagree with this aspect of their thinking. And I do think FotR was the best movie of 2001. That I saw, anyway.Sly

The Oscars arent worthy.. [In reply to] Can't Post

I have just seen The Devil's Backbone, and was absolutely thrilled by it, visionary direction and movie. If the Hobbit has similar quality, then its not the question whether its worthy of the Oscars but whether the Oscars are worthy of this movie. After seeing Pan's labirynth, Cronos and now 'Backbone' GDT advanced to the top of my favorite directors list, and I have not the slightest doubt the Hobbit will set new standards of moviemaking.

And no PJ & GDT wont aim for any awards, they know I hope that movies that aim for awards are hollow and usually fall short and flat. The movie is a reward in itself. Critic awards are for the media.
