first time I saw Ian as Gandalf... I was awed. He totally breathed life into teh character... He was Gnadalf! I believe he has been all for doing the role all along. The only doubt if if the leagal stuff would get out the way befor ehe go too old to do it.

Iam so wiht you on this...

Time for the happy dance [In reply to] Can't Post

*Very* excited to have Sir Ian back as Gandalf, and after waiting for the Hobbit film for so many years already it's a relief to know the project is in such good hands with the original writers and now GDT. With these big annoucements I'm sure everything else will fall into place. It'll be fun to see the who gets cast in the other key roles. Wheee!

I have an unsatisfied desire to shoot well with a bow.

Perfect! It would not be Gandalf if someone other than Ian McKellen would play the role!

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

Delighted to hear Our Gandalf will Return! [In reply to] Can't Post

He's critical, and his makeup is such that aging won't be a problem for him.

I hope if they show the meeting of Arwen and Aragorn, they cast a younger actor for Aragorn but still use Liv for Arwen. That helps to reinforce the point that the elves don't age much compared to humans.

I hope there's a later scene, maybe Aragorn sent off to look for Gollum, where Viggo could be used. Or, perhaps, an aging king and his still young elvish wife could reminisce about Middle Earth, between the death of Smaug and The War of the RIngs. That might be an interesting way to frame the bridge portion. And I hope there's a way to work Ian Holm in there somewhere; much as he's a fine actor, I feel he'd be wrong for the younger Bilbo for over an entire movie.

So Eastwood is definitely out? Bummer! / [In reply to] Can't Post

******************************************
The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.

Apparently Andy Serkis is on board for both movies, however neither his US or UK PR contacts are able to confirm that at the time of writing...expect an official comment on andy's website very soon...

edit: doh just read del toro's little inteview with Xoanon, guess you can confirm it with that.

it's good to have an end to journey towards, but it's the journey that matters in the end

Hopefully this is the first of many announcements of LotR actors reprising their roles. I would love to see Viggo again, which i would imagine we could in the 2nd movie.
