DM of the Rings Can't Post

Someone posted a link to this in the midst of another discussion, and I think it needs its own thread.

http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=612

This is a webcomic that was done awhile ago... if you haven't seen it (as I hadn't) YOU MUST!!!

It's a hilarious mashup of LOTR and traditional D&D.

I read LOTR because I had been given a copy, and had joined a bunch of guys sitting around a table with dice and chips and spilled sodas far into the wee hours, and had rolled a character and asked the DM, "What do I do with this???"

"Play an Elf." he said.

"Wha? Like Hermie in Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer?"

"Read LOTR."

Nuff said. This comic says it all.

"Judge me by my size, would you?" Max the Hobbit Husky.

"It also says you rolled a five for intelligence." [In reply to] Can't Post

I got to play only a handful of D&D games as my fellow gamers (and I use that term loosely) quickly lost interest, but this comic strip really nails the game and gamers well. I think it falls away a bit after the FOTR section but the entire strip is worth reading. :)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

So. Much. Fun. [In reply to] Can't Post

Very nice - I am enjoying all of these links. They are rather spot on...I have a long time D and D habit. Yes, I admit it.

Yes, it's wonderful. [In reply to] Can't Post

Very amusing, and often includes insights about the book, the movies, or both. Much of it is about gamers, of course - but is readily applicable to many ordinary people we know (both fans and non-fans).

I've read it a few years ago, and should re-read it, sometime when I find the time.

Thanks for posting this, swordwhale [In reply to] Can't Post

I had never seen the whole strip. Too funny...and true to life!

“Tollers,” Lewis said to Tolkien, “there is too little of what we really like in stories. I am afraid we shall have to try and write some ourselves.”

Hahahaha! (I feel one of my poem-things coming on) [In reply to] Can't Post

Rudolph the red-nosed ranger
Had a very shiny sword.
And if you ever saw him,
Prancing o'er the D&D "board"
All of the other players
Used to quaff and toast his name;
They used to make poor Hermey
Play all their parts in every game.

Then one foggy Yuleday eve,
Gandalf came to say,
"Hermey, with your teeth so white,
Won't you light up our game tonight?"

Then all the players loved him,
(As Rudolph pouted "How 'bout me!?")
"Hermey the Elven Dentist
You're our new king of errantry!"
