The acorn Can't Post

Wouldn't it have been nice if the acorn Bilbo had in his hand (when Thorin thought he had the Arkenstone) was something he planted that later became the huge tree in Hobbiton under which they haad Bilbo's 111th birthday party?

According to the Official Movie Guide [In reply to] Can't Post

He gives it to the people of Lake-Town. Possible EE scene? That is a nice idea though.

Unfortunately can't happen... [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a nice idea. But that tree is visible from Bag End in FotR. And is there in AUJ and in the auction scene. So it can't be the acorn.

Did you notice the picture of Bilbo in the credits is the pic of Freeman holding the Lego Bilbo, but the minifigure is replaced with an acorn. Smile

Here 's a cute series of cartoons [In reply to] Can't Post

showing the aftermath of the acorn. One shows Bilbo, another shows Bilbo with Frodo growing up, another of him saying farewell and leaving Thorin's ghost behind him under the tree. Make sure you scroll down and see all of them.

They made me go 'Aww!' because that acorn scene was one of the best bits.

Yes, it's a lovely idea... [In reply to] Can't Post

...but I think an oak might need longer to grow to the size of the Hobbiton party tree in Fellowship. There's a 77-year-old-oak near where I live and although it's a full-grown tree it's nothing like as big and heavy as that and the trunk's much thinner.

Yes, and this from Jude Fisher's Visual Companion: [In reply to] Can't Post

Quote
"In Lake-town, it was impossible for anyone to dream of a better future. But now Bard, direct descendant of Lord Girion of Dale, will be able to allow himself to imagine the city restored and rebuilt, the old destruction cleared away, the ancient tragedy avenged. Once more the city may be full of life, full of hope.

The displaced people of Lake-town have great need of hope, of a promise of a new beginning under all the dirt and blood. And so Bilbo Baggins gives to them the acorn he took from Beorn's home. he was going to plant it in his garden at Bag end: but they need this promise of hope more than one small hobbit. Besides, Bilbo has another keepsake which will serve to remind him of all that has been experienced, all who have been lost, all that is to come. A small gold ring, hidden away in his pocket..."

Dormouse is correct. [In reply to] Can't Post

An english oak would take many more years to reach the size of the party tree - two to three hundred is a good age for a large mature oak, and they live a lot longer than that. In the films it's a pine, which it wouldn't be in the story: more likely an ash, a lime or an elm (though our large elms are thought to be non-native). Our native pine, which we call scots pine, doesn't grow like that and wouldn't normally be found in a Midland English field.

Though... [In reply to] Can't Post

...I think an acorn from Beorn's garden leaves this open.

(Though it seems clear this was not the filmmakers' intent. But I agree it is a nice idea).
