Quiz answers. Don't look if you'd like to play!! [In reply to] Can't Post

1. In what 2 colors did Hobbits prefer to dress? Green and yellow. –An Unexpected Party.

2. How many years passed since Gandalf had visited the Shire before the Unexpected Party? 21 “He [Gandalf] had not been down that way. . .not since his friend the Old Took died,…”. –An Unexpected Party . The Old Took died in 2920; the Party was in 2941, which comes to 21 years. But both Gianna and BlackFox guessed 20 years and it got me to thinking - have I missed a quote somewhere? If not, we do know that The Unexpected Party was towards the end of April 2941; but we don’t know the month of the death of the Old Took. I.e. If the Old Took died in late December of 2920 then 20 years could be closer to the mark. . . Ah, you guys! Unsure

3. How many were at the Unexpected Party? 15. 13 Dwarves, one Wizard, and one Hobbit.
4. How many were invited to the Unexpected Party? One – Gandalf
5. How many Trolls did Gandalf trick into turning into stone? Three. –Roast Mutton
Extra credit: What were the Troll’s names, and what food did they complain about having to eat? - Tom, Bert, & William Huggins; mutton
6. How many Eagles originally left their aeries to check out the noise when the party was trapped by wolves in the trees. Three: “He [the Lord of the Eagles] swept up into the air, and immediately TWO of his guards . . . leaped up to follow him. –Out of the Frying Pan
7. How many boats carried Bilbo and the Dwarves from Laketown toward Erebor? Three: “So one day. . .three large boats left Lake-town, laden with rowers, dwarves, and Mr. Baggins. . .” –A Warm Welcome

8. How high and wide was the ‘secret door’ to Erebor? (Careful!) This one’s contradictory. The plain runes on the map say “Five feet high the door and three may walk abreast.” Elrond confirms, -A Short Rest. (But, Ch. 11, -On the Doorstep, states, “A door five feet high and three broad was outlined, and slowly without a sound swung inwards”. This indicates that the door (and tunnel) is three feet wide. This can’t be for a couple reasons: I’m tall and (somewhat thin) about 21 inches shoulder-to-shoulder. A stout Dwarf would be perhaps 6 inches wider. There is no mention of a narrowness of the tunnel (Bilbo and Balin had no trouble walking side-by-side). So I take this sentence as an editorial mishap, and the width of door and tunnel must have been on the order of near seven feet in order for “three to walk abreast” without bumping and crowding.

9. How many of the Dwarves ponies escaped the wrath of Smaug? Three. –Gathering of Clouds
10. How many were in Dain’s force that marched from the Iron Hills toward Erebor? Five hundred. –A Thief in the Night, (two notations).
11. How many hours did Bilbo have for ‘sneaking’ when he took Bombur’s watch? Five. –A Thief in the Night
12. What were the five armies that constituted the Battle of Five Armies? Wargs, Orcs, Men, Elves, Dwarves. –The Clouds Burst
13. What were the two colors of the banners of the Goblins? Red & Black. – The Clouds Burst
14. How many of the original thirteen Dwarves survived the Battle of Five Armies? Ten.
15. How much of the gold and silver was given to Bard by Dain? A fourteenth share. –The Return Journey
16. What month and day did Bilbo return to find himself presumed dead. June 22. –The Last Stage
17. What time of day was “The Auction” to start? Ten o’clock sharp. –The Last Stage

Thanks everyone for playing. SmileSmile

A game based on finding instances of 3? [In reply to] Can't Post

I kept thinking with a hazy memory that Bilbo went to the Lonely Mtn in 3 boats, but logic told me that was too few for so many and their supplies. I should have remembered that Tolkien's default favorite number is 3. Should we hunt for them?

3 branches of Elves (Noldor, Teleri, Vanyar)
3 houses of the Noldor from Finwe's sons (Fingolfin, Finarfin, and Feanor)
3 Rings for the Elves
3 Houses of the Edain

When Gandalf was stumped on which way to go in Moria, how many doors did he face? 3
How many times did the Witch-King utter his spell before the Gate of Minas Tirith was beaten in by Grond? 3
How many times did the thrush need to knock at Erebor according to prophecy? 3
How many attacks were there on Lorien during the War of the Ring? 3

That's just off the top of my head in addition to instances you have. I'm sure there are many more.
