We were working in Sydney that year, and found ourselves unable to fly home, thanks to Ruapehu. A siren went off one morning while we were there last week, and I did briefly wonder if it were the eruption or lahar warning (it was neither, fortunately). One wants to keep clothes, etc, close to hand, just in case.
