Somewhere in my 40s I gave up backpacking for staying in a nice place and doing long day hikes instead. Nothing like a nice hot tub at the end of a hike - and a meal that doesn't go cold the moment you serve it out.

We were working in Sydney that year, and found ourselves unable to fly home, thanks to Ruapehu.
A siren went off one morning while we were there last week, and I did briefly wonder if it were the eruption or lahar warning (it was neither, fortunately). One wants to keep clothes, etc, close to hand, just in case.
