Whenever I teach an art class, I make a huge point of rooting your imagination in reality, and point out some stupid examples of professional artists who did not do their research and their work shows it. Point being: fantasy in particular can't just be off the wall, it has to be rooted in reality... but not tied to it, (or it becomes another stupid reality show). I always thought Tolkien's world had a nifty subtlety to the fantastic elements (magic etc), only slightly lifted beyond the mundane world we know (as opposed to say, the latest Avengers film, or Harry Potter, both of which I also love). As for makeshift bows and Elves running up falling rocks and skydiving Beorns and bunny sleds.... does it make sense within the world of the story (not our world)... There is also an element to PJ's storytelling style which is a bit more gleeful, more 21st century, more... Hobbitish... that allows for some silliness in the midst of chaos and demolition. PS: that orc hit a shallows area and launched off a big rock....
