Fire and Water, or 'Twas a night of deep rumbling

Here is a seasonal tribute to the first sequence in the movie. Spoiler alert, in case that might still be necessary. *** ’Twas a night of deep rumbling heard all through the town, Not a wink was I sleeping, not a moment laid down; Imprisoned, I hung over water in air, With hopes for a means of escape soon from there; My children, defenseless. Hide under your beds, Or better yet, boat far from Lake-town instead! The Master in his nightclothes and Alfrid, his chap, Had me shuttered in jail for an undefined rap, When out from the mountain arose such a clatter, I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter. Up close to the bars I flew like a flash, I started to shudder, my teeth primed to gnash. Along came the beast with its golden-red glow, Giving lustre of doomsday to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But the Master’s long barge, on the run, rowing near. With a sizzle of heat that covered the lake, I knew from the carnage it must be the drake. More rapid than eagles, with wings spread it came, Its advent brought screaming for fear of its flame. Now Tilda, now Sigrid, now Bain, if you're listenin', On, quickly! on swiftly! Be off, ere the blitzin’. To the boat at the dock, to the farthest you’ll row, Now dash away! dash away! dash away, go! As debris that upon the wild hurricane fly, When it runs out of moment, falls fast from the sky, So down to the house-tops the dragon it flew, With a stream of bright fire, the structures they blew. And then, in a twinkling, I summoned a thought, And tearing a blanket, a rope I did wrought. And I threw out the loop through the bars, arcing down, Round the neck of the Master it fell with a bound. His back pinned to the mast, which then shoved at his pate, With the rope’s other end tightly tied to the grate; The boat sallied forth, cell bars popped with a crack, So I sped to the armory, took a bow from the rack. The smoke, how it billowed! my footsteps were shaking! The fires bloomed like roses, the rooftops kept breaking! At the belfry I stood and drew back on my bow, Spied the flaw in its scales, a black gape in the glow; The shot glanced aside as Smaug bared its cruel teeth, And the smoke it encircled the town like a wreath; A second shot found its mark into its weakness, But Smaug shook it off with a laugh, without meekness. Though with plucky aplomb for my aim, nigh an Elf’s, I despaired at my failure, in spite of myself. Then someone arrived and I twisted my head, Along had come Bain, which then filled me with dread. Smaug spoke: That your son, Bow-man? Now he will BURN! And somehow my bow was now broken, I learned. But Bain passed me something I needed the most, And I mounted the limbs to the belvedere posts. I loaded the Black Arrow onto Bain’s shoulder And drew back the string as Smaug came with a smoulder. I loosed ere it flamed, driving straight through the spot, Whereupon its eyes dimmed, and it fell to the shot. *** Thanks for reading. Wishing everyone a happy and peaceful holiday. -RT
*** He was born of mortal frailty mixed with Elven fallen realm, Comin’ home to a land he’d never been before. Arvernian behind him, sailed the seas of Middle-earth, You might say he didn’t know what lay in store. When his wife came out to find him she'd been turned into a bird, Upon her breast there shone a shining star, So he took her to his bosom, and by morn her form returned, And he shifted West to find the high Valar. And in Valinor he went before the high, In doing so, resigned himself to die. Take up arms against the Shadow, asked he of the high, of the Valar high. (Fight, fight the Shadow) of the Valar high. Thank you I nearly ran out of verses and had to end it abruptly. I'm glad Mr. Moore wrote his original long enough.

A standing ovation for the author! I was grinning like a loon as I read it. I hope you have sent a copy to Luke Evans. I think he would appreciate reading it.

Standing o, wow, thanks so much Cassiopeia! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And, what a great idea, I would love to send that to Luke Evans. Is that possible? (I hadn't even thought of it.) Would you have an idea how I could do that? If I could, I would beg him to read it, and if he likes it enough, maybe he would be kind enough to recite that poem on video for us...? in character? OMG!!!! but surely it would take a miracle (he probably gets asked to do stuff like that all the time).... (?)

I do not know how to contact him, wish I did. Would it be possible to get it to him through his facebook account? He seems to keep it current and active. I would love to be able to hear him read it for all of his fans.
