Same as Magpie, I only use abbreviations like LOL and BTW and stuff like that. I find it irritating because I don't text, so I have no idea what a lot of the abbreviations mean when I come across them. And I think a lot people get so used to "text talk" that their proper spelling suffers for it.
But mostly I use those online. The only one I use while texting is lol and ty (thank you) or thx and btw....my predictor is a moron, so rather than bothering to type out an acronym, I'd end up just using the whole word- it's faster, which kind of defeats the purpose of the text talk
And my husband despises it when people use "k" instead of "ok" so I don't use that one.

"Why, NE Brigand could find that post for you". My very favorite TORn acronym.
Like you, I use acronyms, but no other text speak. And sometimes in our family we pronounce the acronyms: "Omgah! Watoof?"
Back in 1998, when I first got onto a messageboard (a gay rights board dedicated to the memory of Matthew Shepard), I first encountered "LOL" and I thought it was some kind of gay slang, like saying "Oh, la!" or something. :-)
Two examples from this thread fwiw & IIRC? And after all the time on this site I still can't figure the exact meaning of the often used " :D " among others.
Fwiw is "for what it's worth", IIRC is "If I recall correctly", and :D is the same thing as (look at it sideways- you see a smiley grin). Similarly to how :) is the same as - both are smileys typically used when emoticons are not available ;)
