My review… 9/10

Call me a biased little man child but I'm giving 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' a 9/10. I just don't really have anything bad to say about it. Few times in my adult years have I ever felt totally transported into another realm while watching a movie as in the days of my wide eyed childhood. The world building by Weta and Jackson is second to none. My objectivity typically keeps that inner child at bay. Not this time! Nope! I was completely enthralled by the fantasy world that is middle-earth. Genuinely great performances and pathos all around, especially from characters in critical moments. No sap. Nothing over cooked. There were scenes that punched me right in the gut. I found the main battle, while not quite as grand in shear size as the battles in the Lord of the Rings, was far more faceted and complex and interesting. It wasn't just one mass of bad guys against one mass of good guys. And of course the special effects were top notch. There were a handful of wonky moments but thats par for the course with such an ambitious project. Over all, the movie 'looked' beautiful. There are a few moments near the end that made me want to jump out of my seat and dance with satisfaction and one other that made me shed a tear. And I never shed tears at the movies. If the first two Hobbit movies were a leisure sunday drive through a pretty mountain range, this movie is a lean, mean fighting machine that drills straight through one side and out the other. No fluff. No nonsense. A rousing final chapter to a trilogy that, while not quite on the same level as the Lord of the Rings, will sit very nicely right next to it. Bravo, Peter Jackson and team, bravo.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.
