Denethor vs. Grima Wormtongue

Two of the most maligned characters in all of Tolkien's canon. How would these two cosseted, cowardly creatures fare in mortal combat against each other? My money's on Grima. He has a knack for survival.

Yes Denethor was corrupted to a degree by Sauron via the palantiri, and fearful of being supplanted by Aragorn. Nevertheless he was a Dunedan, of noble birth; proud, valiant, and noble. He ruled Gondor for some 35 years with justice and honesty during a time of great strife. To put Denethor in the same basket as Grima as “cosseted and cowardly creatures” does not compute. Grima was a cowardly craven traitorous scumbag of evil whose only weapon was his mouth. Uh, Denethor wins! – no contest whatsoever…
“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.” But, sneaking off in daylight takes much more cunning.

Remember that Denethor kept himself ready for battle, wearing mail and sword under his stewardly robes at all times. I don't doubt he'd be at least as tough as Théoden, if he chose to be.
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. -Psalm 107

I dunno...Grima's like a bad penny, he always turns up. Always ready with a knife in the back, as Christopher Lee found out all too well...
Still sharp.

A sneaky knife in the back is not the intent of The Arena -
“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.” But, sneaking off in daylight takes much more cunning.

>Denethor pulls off his fur coat to reveal mail and a massive sword >Grima begs for his life, offering absolutely anything if Denethor spares him >Denethor, being pride incarnate, accepts >Denethor turns away, Grima shivs him in the kidneys And the bookies commit mass suicide.
Still sharp.

Yes Sauron hoodwinked him a bit, but he was still Steward of the mightiest realm of mortal men. The same cannot be said for Grima.
