I agree with a lot of your post tho I wouldn't describe Thorin as "broken". Wounded past bearing perhaps, as I suspect there is no hope in sight, and yet. "if this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end, as to be worthy of remembrance." Reminds me of: Lo, There do I see my Father, and Lo, there do I see my Mother, and Lo, There do I see my Brothers and my Sisters... Lo, There do I see the line of my people back to the beginning. Lo they do call to me They bid me take my place among them In the halls of Valhalla, Where the brave will live Forever. (13th Warrior, Norse prayer for the dead modified by Michael Crichton) I am 90% sure this is Thorin, re looks like a sword, not a bow, and the breadth of the shoulders (also I can't figure out why anyone else who looks like that in silhouette would be in that location). Thorin always gets to me, in the sense of his utter defiance and fire. This Thorin breaks the heart and makes it soar at the same time.

I am quite fond of that Norse prayer. Browsing YouTube one late night and I came across the scene in The 13th Warrior where it is recited and I was deeply moved by its words. The manner in which the poem is delivered also helped to convey its overall heft. I have always been infatuated with kinship and lineage---esp. with strong emphasis. I've yet to watch the 1999 historical fiction action film in its entirety (it remains at the back of my mind) and someday I'd like to also read Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead as well as Ibn Fadlan's original manuscript, but I am beginning to digress. I just wanted to give you a big and non-sarcastic 'NICE ONE!' for bringing that into the discussion. P.S. Disregarding Dáin, I suppose Thorin is technically (or should I say literally?) The King Under the Mountain since he is buried beneath Erebor, if I'm not mistaken.

RA has done such an incredible Thorin - well, I would have followed him to Erebor after Bag End, and anywhere, even to Mordor...

Supposedly has its issues but has so much good stuff including the cast; I like the way the women were handled in this film, and some truly incredible lines here and there. Some good articles out there about it as well.
