Barrow-wight Day? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've just realised that my chapter is the day before my birthday, which, coincidentally, is also Groundhog Barrow-wight Day.

According to folklore, if it is foggy* when a Barrow-wight emerges from its barrow on this day, then the winter weather will persist for six more weeks; if it is sunny, the Wight will see its shadow and retreat back into its barrow in fear, and spring will come early to the Barrow-downs.

It's almost if it was meant to be. HeartWink

*Only if the fog is formed through radiative cooling, mind.

But, can't we do it backwards? [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a great story backwards - for instance:

Frodo rescues Gollum from the lava of Mt Doom, and Gollum guides him back to a surprise party near the Rauros falls, and thence to Moria. There the friends part company. Possibly Gollum already knows that Rivendell, where Frodo is headed ,is a dangerous place.Certainly, the longer Frodo stays there, the sicker he gets. Elrond seems to be doing some kind of medical experiments on him. Finally Frodo is rescued by his friends, who are guided by some kindly Nazgul to Weathertop. There the Witch King is on hand to undo Elron's handiwork.

The hobbits then return the the Shire, accompanied by those nice Nazgul (who quietly scout ahead to make sure they get home safely) and finally Frodo leaves the ring on the mantlepiece of Bag End for Bilbo, who is so pleased that he holds a party.

Smile

~~~~~~
"nowimë I am in the West, Furincurunir to the Dwarves (or at least, to their best friend) and by other names in other lands. Mostly they just say 'Oh no it's him - look busy!' "
Or "Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"
Subliminal messages [In reply to] Can't Post
I knew if we read it backwards, like playing music backwards, we would hear subliminal, subversive messages. Somebody finally cracked the Tolkien code!
Just an FYI for Chapter 3 [In reply to] Can't Post
Barring some last-minute changes, I'm planning to post my discussion in staged threads over the course of the next few days.
I noticed that I have a couple of extra days because of the holidays. Hopefully we get a chance to breathe with this one, knowing that everyone's online routine can be easily interrupted this time of year.
Fear not, dates shall be included in tomorrow's thread. Smile
Thank you, Brethil, for the quick rescue at the Prancing Pony! [In reply to] Can't Post
Quick note to all: Lurker won't be able to cover a chapter as originally intended, so Brethil has kindly stepped in and will take on an extra one at short notice:
Feb 8: At the Sign of The Prancing Pony -- Brethil
Thanks! I had hoped I'd be able to cover it, but my work schedule remains unrelenting, I'm afraid.
Now, if we can lean on Brethil just a little bit more, maybe she can prevent all the horses being driven out of Bree and keep the bannisters from being slashed in the middle of the night, but maybe that's asking just a little too much.
