The 3 Elven Rings...

His knowledge was used to create them yes, so it's power comes from Sauron himself...yet he can't control it..why? He failed to put some kind of home-tracking virus in it? Or was it lacking some kind of spell?

So if he puts his One Ring on..the Elven elders took it off....because he can now control even the bearers of the Elven Ring, yet the Palantir he did not create, yet he was able to use it to corrupt Saruman...

Sauron's Taint and the Lost Remote. [In reply to] Can't Post

What's the Big Deal if He Touched Them Or Not?

Morgoth's Taint:

Now Melkor began the delving and building of a vast fortress, deep under Earth, beneath dark mountains where the beams of Illuin were cold and dim. That stronghold was named Utumno. And though the Valar knew naught of it as yet, nonetheless the evil of Melkor and the blight of his hatred flowed out thence, and the Spring of Arda was marred. Green things fell sick and rotted, and rivers were choked with weeds and slime, and fens were made, rank and poisonous, the breeding place of flies; and forests grew dark and perilous, the haunts of fear; and beasts became monsters of horn and ivory and dyed the earth with blood.
-Of the Beginning of Days, The Silmarillion

Note the description matches those of Mordor in LOTR. So it seems Sauron can also taint things:

Sauron was become now a sorcerer of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched…
-Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin, The Sil

And They are used to preserve what exactly...

Now these were the Three that had last been made, and they possessed the greatest powers. Narya, Nenya, and Vilya, they were named, the Rings of Fire, and of Water, and of Air, set with ruby and adamant and sapphire; and of all the Elven-rings Sauron most desired to possess them, for those who had them in their keeping could ward off the decays of time and postpone the weariness of the world.
-Of the Rings of Power, The Sil

His knowledge was used to create them yes, so it's power comes from Sauron himself...yet he can't control it..why? He failed to put some kind of home-tracking virus in it? Or was it lacking some kind of spell?

But Sauron could not discover them, for they were given into the hands of the Wise, who concealed them and never again used them openly while Sauron kept the Ruling Ring. Therefore the Three remained unsullied, for they were forged by Celebrimbor alone, and the hand of Sauron had never touched them; yet they also were subject to the One.
-Of the Rings of Power, The Sil

In those days the smiths of Ost-in-Edhil surpassed all that they had contrived before; and they took thought, and they made Rings of Power. [….] But he, finding that he was betrayed and that the Elves were not deceived, was filled with wrath; and he came against them with open war, demanding that all the rings should be delivered to him, since the Elven-smiths could not have attained to their making without his lore and counsel. But the Elves fled from him; and three of their rings they saved, and bore them away, and hid them.
-ibid

(BTW, note apparently more than three Elven Rings of Power were made, but the Elves were only able to save three of them.)

...yet the Palantir he did not create, yet he was able to use it to corrupt Saruman...

There is nothing wrong with your palantir. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your palantir.
-Mordor News: Fair and Balanced

Basically it's like someone whose TV is stuck on Fox News is convinced pointy-headed liberals are destroying America, and someone who only watches MSNBC News is similarly convinced greedy heartless conservatives are destroying America.

If only Saruman and Denethor had had the remotes to their respective palantirs, the War of the Ring would have turned out much differently.

I met a Balrog on the stair.
He had some wings that weren't there.
They weren't there again today.
I wish he would just fly away.

the elven rings of power [In reply to] Can't Post

included 16 other great rings that were given to 9 men and 7 dwarves by sauron after he captured the rings, as well as many lesser rings. The 9 and 7 were never meant for others by the will of the elves, it is sauron alone who took them, gave them to the other races and controlled the respective bearers. The FOTR movie intro completely got that part wrong when compared to the books unless I am horribly mistaken.

That's how I understand it [In reply to] Can't Post

That's how I understand the history of the rings to be, ElendilTheShort. It's a relief to see someone else read it the same way.
