I prefer not to use a variety of passwords. While it would be entertaining for this site if I chose the same way elsewhere, I'd never remember them all... :)

But I have seen another poster here say that if you don't know something, or need a reference to Tolkien literary sources, then 'Google is your mellon!' I laughed out loud at that!
Call me Rem, and remember, not all who ramble are lost...Uh...where was I?

Easy to remember, sure, but a hacker could easily break it, and if you used it for all of your passwords...Uh oh. Longer passwords are always better, and long passwords that combine capital + lower case letters + numbers/symbols are best. Example: mellon is weaker than TaurieL which is weaker than !Gal@drieL With all of the long, complicated names in Tolkien's writings, we Ringers have no excuse for weak passwords. Let the hackers beware!

****************************************** I met a Balrog on the stair. He had some wings that weren't there. They weren't there again today. I wish he would just fly away.

Agreed, it doesn't make sense to have too many different passwords but I doubt that whoever is using "mellon" here would have trouble remembering it. I think the whole business of passwords on a site like this is overkill. Do I worry that someone will come on here IN MY NAME asking, "WHY GANDOLPH NOT USE GIANT EEGUL TO DROP RING IN BIG VOLCANO?" I do not.

For passwords that are long, memorable, and strong, use acrostics. For example, The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began. Trgeo&o,dftdw1b.

I was on a board that didn't require passwords, a long time ago.

It was awful. People would come on, posting using the names of regulars, threatening to rape and kill people in really graphic terms. Believe me, passwords are well worth it.
