Billy Boyd on "The Last Goodbye" Can't Post

In a Interview to Entertainment Weekly, Billy Boyd had this to say about the song, the movies, the fans and PJ and co.:

"I wanted the song to be a goodbye to all the fans who have been part of this amazing journey and to the whole world of Tolkien as it has been told in the cinema for our generation."

"No one knows the world of Tolkien better than Peter, Fran and Philippa, and I feel incredibly touched and honored to be asked to write and perform this song, and to be at the start and end of these beautiful, historic stories. To once again work so closely with them has been one of the true honors of my working life."

So, it seems, the song is about and directed to the audience, rather than a goodbye from Bilbo to Thorin (or vice versa).

One can only hope they do get it right, because if something about this song goes wrong, they'll ruin not only the third Hobbit movie experience, but also the character Pippin for LOTR.

Also, I could have done without "No one knows the lore better than the writing team" bit. While it's clearly just an exaggeration, it does sound rather bad coming from him.

How would it ruin the movie.. [In reply to] Can't Post

And Pippin?

Not sure I follow. It's just a song.

Wished... [In reply to] Can't Post

... they'd gone for closing out this trilogy, not the whole ME franchise.

Feels off for a movie PJ wants to be a bridge to FotR.

Still hoping lyrics from "Road goes ever on" will be used. BB's voice should provide for a treat for the ears Smile

Not ruin "the movie"... [In reply to] Can't Post

but "the movie experience" or part of it. If the song is so much for the audience that it feels off.

I know, i'm probably just worrying too much.

I am not sure i follow you [In reply to] Can't Post

How would a song in the end titles of a Hobbit movie would ruin a whole character we see throughout the entire trilogy of LOTR?

Thanks for the link -interview!

Well just because they work with an adaption, it doesn't make them experts. [In reply to] Can't Post

As far as I remember Steven Colbert beat Phillippa Boyens in a knowledge duel. Also sir Cristopher Lee I would assume has better knowledge of ME. Wink

Remember that these guys only work with an adaption. With some of the decisions they have made with these movies, I would say they are not really "the big three" of ME lore.

uh, you guys... [In reply to] Can't Post

songs can have multiple meanings. enya and annie lennox's songs were just as applicable to situations that were going on in my life at the time those films released as they were directly about the events of the film. i'm sure the last goodbye will be similarly open in terms of interpretation, while also addressing the plot of the film/films. it's going to be okay. :)

That was... [In reply to] Can't Post

... the typical rave of associates of a movie production regarding their filmmakers.

It is not like they referred to themselves as such.

Depends tho wouldn't say it ruins anything [In reply to] Can't Post

But I'm not wild about either one of the Hobbit songs, tho they are fine for me "unto themselves". But I feel transported by these films so am not always in a hurry to get up etc. and so re DOS cut the BR before that "coffee-house" sounding song comes on. Notice re some films a fair amount of folks like to sit through the credits.

So yeah, I am hoping this is as good as "Mist and Shadows" and feels like Middle Earth.

I would agree that they understand the material there are plenty of people who know Tolkien's LOTR and TH material better than they do or at least just as much.

This tale grew in the telling. . .

I like the sound of this... [In reply to] Can't Post

I think he'll do a great job, and i hope they go with a more 'classical' sound this time around.

I'm just glad they're not going the Ed Sheeran route again-- that was a real misstep imo.
