If I do say so myself and I do! I mix the cocoa powder with some sugar and throw in a teaspoon or so of instant coffee. The coffee makes the cocoa taste more like dark chocolate. Then I add just enough water to make a smooth syrup. The sugar helps break up the cocoa so it dissolves better. I cook on medium heat until it comes to a full boil and then slowly add a dash of vanilla. Then I add milk and heat through. Top it off with a dollop of whipped cream and serve. Sometimes I add a touch of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne. That's really good on a cold day!

Two of my neighbors host a mini-party while giving out treats to the costumed children in the neighborhood. They have chili, cornbread, mulled wine and hard cider for us, candy for the kids. So we'll show Ataahua a US Halloween on Friday. Should be lots of fun! Saturday I have tickets for a Loft Walk in the Printers Row neigborhood. Many of the old printing houses have been renovated into lofts, and several will be open for viewing. The Encyclopedia Britannica, Collier's Magazine and many other publications were once printed in Printer's Row.

I'll be right over. My grandma used to make those. Gosh they were good. Recipe please? Her's was lost when she died. We never could find the old composition book where she kept them. All we could find was the one where she was recopying them all, but she hadn't finished.

That does look good. And the fritters we had *were* good! I ate way too many. We bought cider and pumpkins an some acorn squash and apples! it's the only time of the year when I can reliably get Jonagold variety. It's a cross between Jonathans and Golden Delicious and it's my all-time favorite apple. It cooks well and it's the best eating apple I've ever tasted. Thanks for the extra helping Gramma!

I've not had them before, but might suggest the idea to some baking-inclined folks in the family.
Join us every weekend in the Hobbit movie forum for this week's CHOW (Chapter of the Week) discussion!

A dash of vanilla - that would bring out the cocoa flavor! A dash of cinnamon is nice, I've tried that, but not the cayenne, I don't know if I'm daring enough for that! One of my favorite "desserts" is half-coffee, half-cocoa - with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

From an old Betty Crocker cookbook, slightly modified by me. Blend: 1/2 cup butter and 1&1/2 cup brown sugar; add 2 eggs, 1 tsp vanilla, and 3/4 cup applesauce. Mix in 3&1/4 cup flour, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp cloves. Dough will be gooey! Then add in at least a cup of chocolate chips (we've been using the Ghirardelli chocolate chips). Drop by tablespoonful onto cookie sheet (they're large, so I make 9 per sheet), and bake at 375 F for 10 minutes, or until set. If the kids are around, may need to make a second batch an hour later!

On our local news a week or so ago was a story about a local high school girl who played rugby until she was diagnosed with cancer (I forget what kind). She was a big fan of the All Blacks. We had an international rugby tournament here, and the US team made an appearance at her school and she was given free tickets for her and her family to see this game!
