copyright problem

there's a thread here with a link to a site which shows Tolkien's illustrations - *link removed* Apart from the fact that the author of this page doesn't know anything about Tolkien's publishing history; all of Tolkien's pictures are copyright. I don't think we ought to be linking to pages like this. .

I removed the link and posted a reminder about linking to websites that have illegal content.

I'll respond to your question on Main here, since I'm removing the thread. Anything that is reproduced - text or pictures - that is not from the Tolkien Estate - is likely a copyright violation. There are some laws of Fair Use, which lets the author use small bits of text, or portions of a picture, however the complete reproduction of Tolkien's illustrations was not authorized. The author of the article did credit the pictures, but they did not have permission - you would have seen language like "Reprinted with permission from the Tolkien Estate" or something like that. Now, you can have copies of the artwork for your private use, but they can not be published without permission. Hope that helps - any time you are unclear, it's fine to PM one of the admins and ask before you post. We're happy to help
