Slovak [In reply to] Can't Post

My dad's family is all from Slovakia...and while I grew up around the language and can converse in it easily enough, I'm hardly a "master" of it, so that's what I'd pick. It's still so hard to choose, though! It's like when someone asks what your favorite book is --how do you pick just one? Evil

Being an American, this would be really useless, but it sure is an intriguing language.

Min, Yue, Hakka, Wu, etc?

There are many varieties/dialects in the 'Chinese' (Zhongwen) language group. Wink

Sauron: "Mine's better."

I was looking for an emphatic 'ae'.
There are supposed to be macrons though. Hopefully I didn't say anything weird by mistake. Crazy

It’s Welsh for me too.. [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a great-grandfather Shem who was Welsh.

But the Welsh to English accent – WHEW! My wife and I were in London years ago, in one of those stand-up pubs. I had a Welshman to my left and my wife had an Englishman to her right. I could not understand a single word the Welshman was saying (in English), and the Englishman, laughingly, had to translate for me. It was just a real hoot!

Right now [In reply to] Can't Post

Spanish would make most sense to learn, but I guess I have a chance to do that without magic.
So my pick would be either French or Russian. I really like French and keep trying to learn it but I have a hard time with it. And Russian is one of those "would love to speak but don't think I will ever even try to learn" sort of languages for me.

French [In reply to] Can't Post

still kicking myself that I let it go after high school (when I was so fluent I was dreaming in it).

Then Italian, because it's so beautiful, and so I could read Dante in the original.

Then Scottish Gaelic to honor my roots.

LOL! [In reply to] Can't Post

Like trying to understand someone speaking with a heavy Scots brogue!

And there are plenty of regional accents here in the States that can flummox a visitor...

I wonder if other languages have similar problems?

I'm studying Elvish so it'd be nice to have that mastered and maybe Klingon amd Wookie since you CAN learn those too!Cool

Realistically, though, Spanish would be handy, French would be nice. I'd love Chinese/Japanese and Russian because they're such difficult languages and a wonderful braggin right to possess!!! Wink

Also Latin and Greek! Such old languages would be fun!

Probably Russian [In reply to] Can't Post

Part of it is I enjoy a lot of Russian cinema, and Andrei Tarkovsky is one of my heroes, so it'd be fun to understand the language.

After that it'd be Finnish (because I'm 1/4 Finnish), German and Japanese.

Difficult question [In reply to] Can't Post

Just one? Do extinct languages count, too? Then my choice would be Etruscan.
Otherwise probably Basque. Or Gaelic. Or....
