some things are WORTH appreciating [In reply to] Can't Post

Re mindlessness - don't think TORn is that kind of board - even the design exudes taste - and if you lurk around like I did for a long while you see terrifying posts about the Silmarillion etc. which I think are enough to convince those who prefer a more IMMEDIATE-type interchange to head to other pastures - probably those with lots of glitzy ads.

(Well OK, there was that one post that speculated about the effect of a hot spring on Thorin's hairHeart and the rosy flush to his skin and the silver beads of water tangled in the dark silky waves and all but it was just that ONE time and anyway we've gotten to see the effect gratis just watching the films TongueWinkCoolLaugh)

Seriously *grins* I need high res too! And Dean is just wonderful - a talented photographer, able to fight! and I think one of the most appealing spokesmen for the Hobbit - there's just this way about him and I always smile listening to him in the Appendices. I also admire the grace and good humor of just getting thrown into this project, when all the other dwarves had had so much time with each other, but it seems like Dean folded right in like he had always been there - and I wish he had been, for his sake, and for ours.

But there's this maturity about him too that makes for a perfect Fili, an completely believable as Thorin's heir and sister-son.HeartHeartHeartHeartHeart Hope one day I can be at a con and tell him in person, tho am sure he has heard it before.Smile And if nothing else, the EE no matter what is going to have more of the Durins and the rest of the Company - finally more dwarf time!!!

costumes makes sense and more family dramas [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
I'm gonna GUESS that re the armor and costumes the designers are just carefully continuing what they have done so well with the Heirs (re the WETA books) - that the Durins all have a distinct color (originally if muted like Thorin's being the rich blue - at first) and re BOFA they have "royal" leather and chain maille - different, yet with details that tie the costumes together. One thing I have been liking a lot is the triangular quilting? braiding? of Thorin and Fili's gloves where that motif was used.

But, your comment I think makes a point, in that I think Fili will be far more emotionally torn than Kili IN THE SENSE of split thinking - e.g. as the elder and heir to the throne, think Fili would be far more immersed in the concepts of duty to his race, and utter loyalty, and stories of elven betrayal.

And yet he watched an elf heal his beloved brother. Whereas Kili I think is not as immersed in the old traditions, so would just outright - not unlike Tauriel really - be more likely to question fighting with the elves.

So in that sense I think the weight on Fili is very heavy, having to weigh both sides. And it will be really interesting to see how this plays out.

Yes, I like the triangle/right angle look to the Durin armor and (Thorin's axe, darn it, another weapon I love...)

I'm on automatic dragon pilot tonight but I appreciate your insight into where Fili and Kili's relationship with each other and their uncle might go. This is going to be a fun subject to expand upon once the film is out.

very good points [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
I hadn't thought about it that way -- that Fili and Kili might for once be divided on a subject. I'm fairly certain that Fili will be more outspoken than Kili due to the fact that he is older, more mature (in that he thinks things through more), and he already has a bone to pick with Thorin about leaving Kili in Lake-town. He's also gotten a taste of leadership (in Bard's house, and, I'm assuming, leading the dwarves back to Erebor -- in fact, at that point, he might even think that he is king, that Thorin died), so he'd probably be more willing to speak up.

Kili does sort of hero worship Thorin so he could possibly stand by him (to a degree; I doubt that the filmmakers would change the fact that he's against Thorin's choices; that's a crucial part of his character). That would show extreme loyalty on his part. I don't think most people would follow someone who said to their face that they weren't enough to prolong the Quest.

Lots to think about. Smile This will definitely be the movie where the family dynamics between the three are brought to the forefront. It will be interesting to see where loyalties lie when all's said and done.

I haven't seen DoS since theatrical in January, so I've already forgotten the Fili examples you mentioned. Though I do remember Kili's hero worship of Thorin, I do wonder how he'll react to his uncle's dragon sickness and being left behind. I think he'll want to prove himself even more now, but I have a feeling he'll also regret following Thorin when things get dicey. At this moment, I am very concerned for these two (I had not been previously but the discussions with yourself and Avandel reminded me these are Thorin's relations. Something i knew, but needed reminded of.

Well, that's good to hear. [In reply to] Can't Post

Smile Some of the posts are terrifying! I've read The Silmarillion (more like muddled through, but I gave it a good old college try), and I'm completely lost when I read some posts on here. They make me appreciate Tolkien even more. It's mind blowing how much depth he gave Middle-earth (and how he could remember it all!). Quite frankly, I think he must have had an IQ of at least 140. Wink

There's nothing wrong with a little appreciation, I suppose. After all, things like this deserve to be swooned over:

Especially when it comes with a voice like this. *glazed eyes* Wink Am I right?

Yep, me too (although I don't own the EE). He's so easy-going and good-natured about everything. I don't know if it's just a "screen personality" (and I hope it's not), but he seems like he'd be a really nice person in real life.

He is the perfect Fili! I've never seen Rob Kazinsky in any other film so I really can't judge his acting ability, but DO fits the role so well, and I'm so glad the change was made. His character does exude maturity (DO does too offscreen) and a bit more confidence than AT's Kili, so it makes it believable that he's looked after his little brother for a while and been groomed to be a prince (and king).

So do I. That's assuming, of course, that I could get beyond the heart rate through the roof, knees shaking, and frozen tongue (as well as a litany of other impediments) that I talked about either. Laugh Well, heck, I'd just settle for getting to see him from afar (it would be better for my health too). I doubt I'll ever get lucky enough to meet him or any of the other actors/crew. I don't exactly have a wad of money burning a hole in my pocket, so I'm afraid a con's out of the picture for now.

Aww! Ori is just downright adorable in that picture. Heart
