Is probably a bit strong - given that we know Thrain went to see Gandalf before he went missing and we know Thrain gave Gandalf the key, it is no leap to say Thrain gave him the key (and map) when he went to see him. It is possible there is some other scenario, but if we hear nothing to the contrary then this seems to be a clear enough situation.

In Bree Gandalf does not reveal the key or map to Thorin. We have no idea (in the films) how Gandalf got the key. I already explained that I misread the previous post. I know perfectly well that Gandalf brought out the key at Bag End (it is unclear in AUJ if Thorin was already aware that Gandalf had the map--but he did not seem to be surprised to see it). Boyen's comments quoted in this post indicate that the scene where Thrain gives the map and key to Gandalf was shot and should be in either TH:DoS-EE or in the final film.

I completely agree... that the part in Bree, Gandalf has some sort of flashback. And this would have been the most logical place to insert that scene. Hoping its in the EE, that would give the Thrain scene in DG more meaning.
