Thanks! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's quite interesting to read the reviews of the various books at the times they first came out. For instance, instead of reviewing the book itself, W. H. Auden spends most of his article on the newly-released The Return of the King meditating on the conflicts between quest fiction and the modern novel, trying to justify the literary worth of The Lord of the Rings as a finally-revealed single work. All he says about the book at hand is basically that Frodo succeeds!

He clearly assumed, and the editors of the Times agreed, that any specific review was pro forma. As I remember from my first reading, The Two Towers ends with the mother of all cliffhangers: Sam realizing that Frodo was alive but captured by the Enemy, along with the Ring. The audience for The Return of the King was well locked in by having read the first two volumes, and would have bought the third one with their last dollar, any NY Times review to the contrary be damned.

Whoa! Lesson plans, no less, [In reply to] Can't Post

although it took some careful searching to find them, as the heading link didn't go to anything Tolkien related. http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/?s=Explore+the+world+of+J.R.R.+Tolkien

I could spend all day here. Thank you!
