Is it really too much to ask for some semblance of continuity within a single trilogy of films? Thrain's missing eye was his most distinguishing feature, so why change it, unless Jackson just doesn't care about continuity?

That said, I am holding out hope that it is fixed for the EE.

It is still possible that the image we saw in the trailer is not the final version. I still think that this (both the eye and the tatoos) will be fixed in post. It is obvious even in the teaser image that Thrain is supposed to have lost his left eye even where the gleam of a black contact is visible under the prosthetics.
