interesting comparisons here. I somehow didn't realize Tolkien was so young when he wrote that early poem!

A miracle how something this creative and magical came out of the horrors of World War I. Leads me to my favourite Tolkien quote:
“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.” "I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

Fascinating - and I didn't know about John Garth's new book (I do now, though!)

I especially appreciated how the speaker mentioned what was in the newspapers around that particular day - the mindset and mood of the time - in relation to Tolkien's writing of that poem and its content. Thanks for sharing the link :).

Like others noted this is fascinating. Middle-Earth has existed all of my life (and I'm 50) so it seems like it always was. As though Tolkiens mythology is from a time before history. Which I like to think it was.

that I happened to visit 'Main' today, besides my usual 'Hobbit' boards... I have missed the day itself, but a least I caught this thread on this important event, before it disappeared to page 2...! Anybody would have a way to get a transcript of this talk? Perhaps from the speaker himself? I couldn't follow his talk really well, English not being my mother tongue...
