Original "Hobbit" review NY Times, March 1938 Can't Post

Happy Birthday "The Hobbit", Frodo and Bilbo Smile

"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien

We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

Nice little review. Thanks for the link!

I've been flipping my way through a lot of Estonian newspapers and magazines from the 1920s and 1930s lately in search of material for my thesis, so it was interesting for me to see how alike this review was to those I've been reading for the past couple of months. But that was purely a bonus, of course.

Happy birthday, Bilbo and Frodo! Smile

Thank you! [In reply to] Can't Post

How interesting to read a review that quite frankly treats The Hobbit as a child's story "for all ages". It's also notable that in 1938 a reviewer can assume her readers have read Morris; today only Tolkien scholars still note that influence which Tolkien himself freely acknowledged.

I was fascinated too by the reference to Sleigh's "Mappe of Fairyland", which I've never come across before. In fact the Map of Wilderland in The Hobbit is not much like Sleigh's, which evokes Peter Pan, Hans Christian Andersen, and other nursery realms that Tolkien made such an effort to transcend in his own version of Faerie.

One of the references cut from later editions, perhaps wisely. I had come across this review before; thanx for posting the link!

Is the type too small in the preview? Just use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+ (Control+plus) to zoom in. In order to reverse this aspect, use CTRL- (Control+minus). All good!Cool

Such a cool little review. [In reply to] Can't Post

And I would say the same still stands today because I find the work of Professor Tolkien to be just that. Original, and quite refreshing.

Thanks for posting. Probably never would have thought to go back to find that on my own.
