Looking at their designs in the movies, the appendices, and the books is beyond impressive. Super size kudos to both of them, along with the people who hired them and all the crew members who translate their designs into the finished products.

Agreed. Much of their work for these films was truly magnificent.

Not only do I love their concept art, but love the fact that they come in behind the actual filming, and are filling in and "expanding space" well beyond the actual sets. And love, love, love the concept art for the dwarf aesthetic and the thought that was put into that, and the artwork itself. AMAZING guys who have done some classic illustrations for Tolkiens's works - beautiful.

...their work in the Chronicles Art & Design books (and also the landscape / environments by Gus Hunter). I like how, on one of the DVD appendices or production diaires, you get to see AL and JH head off with their pads to a hillside, and just start sketching. I think it might have been planning the Hobbiton set. A reliable source told me he watched Alan Lee doing a drawing from start to finish, and that it happens in a most unusual way (well this particular drawing did, anyway). Most artists will first sketch out a basic composition, planning where the main elements on the page will fall, then starting to fill in, often from the middle outwards. Whereas AL started at the very top of the page, filling in every detail, finishing that portion, before moving steadily downwards. Like an Etch-A-Sketch in reverse (if you know the kids item I mean) revealing the drawing instead of erasing it. As though AL is revealing something that has always been there on the page. That to me is akin to Michaelangelo revealing the figure that has always been waiting inside the block of marble. For my source, who is also a talented artist, watching AL at work was something quite amazing.

I think they "got" the atmosphere of Jackson's Hobbit very well..

For me the main achievement of these films is actually how they are able to walk the middle ground between the tone of LOTR and the Hobbit book and I think Lee and Howe's designs are a big part of that. The designs in the Hobbit have enough of the realism of LOTR to sell that it exists in the same world but theres also a more fantastical element to many of them. Erebor is less epic than Moria but more "mechanical", Goblin Town is even more ramshackle than the orcs dwelling in Isenguard, The Elf Kings halls take Lorien and add in a touch more fantasy, Laketown takes the norse influences from Rohan and plays them up even more, etc.

I'm in awe of anyone who can draw/sketch/paint, and the description of Alan Lee's process is amazing. When I got the first Art & Design book, I was really fascinated by all of the little sketches of props in AUJ, and was inspired to try to copy some. Didn't get too far in that endeavor because I can't draw (ha!). So, I must be content to sit back and admire their work and marvel at the world they've visualized and help bring to life. However, I am still waiting for them to finish up their 3D drawings. As far as I can tell, they only did the one.
