That is why I suggested more than one possibility. I did not mean, though, that Sauron was attempting to intimidate Smaug into allying with him. A show of might may have been able to impress the dragon, though, and convince him to fall in with the Dark Lord. Also, Sauron could make promises to provide security for Smaug's hoard if the dragon would aid in the conquest of the North, as well as assurances (whether sincere or not) that Smaug could keep his autonomy in Erebor.
