“The good thing with battles is that you can kill one or two people, and God knows there’s a few of them that need to be knocked off,” grins Peter Jackson. That title change – ditching ‘There And Back Again’ in favour of something altogether more epic – should be a big enough hint that the third installment aims to be the most impactful of the three, with Jackson compelled to rename it the first time he viewed a rough cut.
For anyone who hasn’t been ‘spoiled’ by J.R.R. Tolkien’s original tome – and wants to go into the final film cold – all you need to know is that the titular battle includes Dwarves, Elves, Men of Dale and a whole heap of Goblins fighting over the treasure that Smaug’s been cosying up with inside the Lonely Mountain. So the outcome will impact on all corners of Middle-earth.
Despite the necessarily enormous scale, Jackson’s not going for a ‘bigger is better’ approach when it comes to comparisons with The Return Of The King’s legendary skirmish. “I’m sure, in numbers, it’s not going to be bigger than the Pelennor Fields battle,” explains Jackson. “It’s not the intention to make it bigger.” Given the technology involved in bringing the sequences to the screen, it can feel particularly small scale behind the scenes. “Yeah, it’s like there’s three people and a box,” jokes Orlando Bloom, returning as Elven archer Legolas aglongside the other new cast of The Desolation Of Smaug.
Ironically, some of the highest tech has also allowed PJ to return to his low-fi filmmaker roots. “When we do an animation of a sequence in a battle, say you’ve got 500 of these guys climbing up a wall and something smashes through, if we do a 20-30-second piece of animation or performance capture on that, I can then walk into a stage, and I can film it myself with a virtual camera. I’m filming all the battle stuff single-handedly, just like my Super 8 days. I get to actually be right in the midst of this huge battle, filming it myself like a combat cameraman.”
And while the scale might be huge, Jackson isn’t looking at it as just one sequence. “I don’t really think of it as a battle, or a self-contained thing,” he explains. “It’s a storyline with all of our characters that is continuing and developing all the way through. It’s still part of the storytelling of the film.” It’ll be against this backdrop that all of the characters will come into focus, as their fates in the future of Middle-earth are doled out. “Just about everybody ends up in different ways participating in this major battle at the end of the movie,” says the director. “You’re always just thinking of the arcs and the characters.”
So all in all, expect a darker, grittier affair than the comparatively cheery previous parts. “The progression of the tone is what you would expect it to be,” explains Jackson. “Things just start to get darker and darker as the stakes [go up] and the screws get tighter and tighter. It’s got a nice thriller kind of pace to it.”
And the final role that the battle will serve is linking up Jackson’s entire Middle-earth saga. “I think it’s going to be the most emotional, the most tense, of the three – I think it’s my favourite of the three to be honest,” admits the director. “But when you get to the end of it, I think it is going to feel like it’s the right time to hand over to The Fellowship Of The Ring, it’ll just feel like we’ve gone on that journey. Because I was always very much aware of them being a six-film set…”
