What is Kili holding (trailer question)?

This question has been passing to and fro on tumblr, and I thought I might as well ask here. In this picture from the trailer we see that he is holding something. At a first glance, it looks like the hilt of the sword, but when you look closer you can see it actually goes to the floor like a type of pole or speak. My guess is it is a weapon of some sort, though some claim it to be a walking stick (which I do not believe). Any ideas?

the other day what weapon might be. Due to the shape I think is an ax, as you can see holds more than half of the rod, just before the blade to make you understand .. Although I think it is the weapon with which to fight Kili during the Battle of the 5 Armies, I think it will be a sword .. Although still confident in the possibility that it can get even with him a bow and arrow!

You always sound so authoritative. I think it is due to your avatar…

... and 'immortal' underneath it! (I think he's probably right about the axe)

I did consider this and seems only the most logical idea.

It's definitely not a walking stick

because his right leg was injured, not his left. I would see him using a walking stick with his right hand, rather than the left, to compensate for the weakness and lack of support in the right. I'm inclined to agree with others here- it looks like it might be an axe (but I disagree with the blade going inward- a warrior should know better than to put the blade anywhere near his person, let alone under his arm (there's an artery there in the armpit, at least in humans and also presumably in dwarves, and he could bleed out quite quickly- plus chain mail tends to have weak spots in the armpit, IIRC)). I think the blade is pointing straight outward, which would explain why we don't see it (and also why the top has a weird line in the middle of it).

That he has the axe head going under his arm, and is using it as a crutch. The mail not covering his underarm would be odd... and that someone who knows well enough about fighting would be smart enough not to cut themselves in such a manner.

And I had never really noticed that they all had such different axes!... Shame on me, and thank you for the pictures so full of impressive detail...
