Peter Jackson is one of the few directors working who can do whatever the heck he wants. I honestly think DOS was trimmed back because PJ, personally, took the criticisms of the first film to heart. I think he's very aware of what general audiences and critics are saying. It's a shame, I think most fans would have liked the continued pace of AUJ (thank god for the upcoming much longer EE). I think BOTFA will be the length that PJ wants it to be. He's got a career ahead of him, I don't think he wants to be known as the "super drawn out movie" guy. For better or worse, he's listened to people at least to a degree (wish he had listened to the CGI critics over the duration critics!!)

I think you're spot on here Of all the Middle-earth films, this will be the most sedentary. The absence of any travel, any forward dynamic, any sense of exploration and discovery coupled with the fairly heavyweight political and military machinations that are going to dominate proceedings, I suspect, would make 2 hours 45 minutes quite a gruelling challenge. I don't think the targeted 2 hours 20 minutes has anything to do with studio pressure; I think it's good artistic decision making. "More Middle-earth the better" is no way to make movies, imho. I am glad PJ seems to focus on the pacing... I did not have much issues with the pacing of AUJ and DoS... but for Bot5A - I am sure of that - the pacing and timing will be similarly important to that of TTT.
"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

Yeah, that line and the bit about Thranduil and Bard offering and accepting payment is intriguing.
Just call me Lurker. Fan of both books and movies; it seems I have severely misnamed myself... for the moment. Appreciating Thranduil, thread by thread: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII (Tis true! More appreciation threads for Thranduil exist than ME movies) Thrall Wars!: What business do Elves, Dwarves or Men(?) have with drooling thralls, yea, with smartphones in tow, unto the slopes of Erebor? ... oh, yes, the Hobbit's lingering in some shadows, ever ready to swoop to the hairy rescue. Take cover if you dare! Teh partsies: Prologue (aka the 'tater-mash of whatever came before), Two, Three, Four (new! posted 16 Jul) "BoFA"= The Battle || "BotFA"/"tBofTA" = The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies ======= Middle-earth dispatches out of the lurkmirk

And The Hobbit is NOT the equivalent of those unmentionables of the Star Wars-verse. To me, those abominations ain't got nothing on TH. I LOVE SW 4-6, but to-date I have not yet managed to sit through any one of the prequels in its entirety, but TH? I keep going back for re-watching, end-to-end in a sitting. No way these two sets of movies share anything in their respective worlds except for the unfortunate coincidence of being prequels shot after the sequels.

Tho I hafta flinch when I read about the "digital actors". I know in some shots that is unavoidable, but with geek types like me who go through frame by frame - we notice stuff. On the positive side, having clicked through much, gotta say I am incredibly impressed by how much WASN'T fudged - remarkable detail. *Cough* and I am still hoping they have a scene where Thorin fires an arrow off, re the book unimpressed with what he was hearing....
"Looking back on Bag End, it's...it's like we're just so innocent. We were all so happy...in that place, about to start this journey" - Richard Armitage, The Hobbit Appendices. "If this is to end in fire, then we will all burn together" - Thorin, The Desolation of Smaug.

Yeah, that line and the bit about Thranduil and Bard offering and accepting payment is intriguing. That sounds like a reference to the Arkenstone that Bilbo handed over (that is, will hand over) to Bard and Thranduil in their encampment.

I can watch the Hobbit films over and over, tirelessly. Not SW. Tis irrevocable, like a law of physics I am(was... I guess I am criminally lapsed now) a SW fan, and clearly not as ardent as I should be. I bow to your greater fortitude in sitting through them and the viewing redux too. Honestly, I've got a complex from it - it really hurts my cred and self-respect that I cannot stand the prequels. Its even more pathetic when I think about other stuff I have managed to sit through. For example, with the abominations called the Transformers trilogy, I can absolutely sit through them and take it I'm coasting through a great slideshow of supremely lovingly rendered live-action Transformers shots - absolute CGI porn (... that looks wrong and i hope that word is permissible in this context, if not, I offer up "candy" as an alternative), no brain activity needed. But with the SW prequels, because they are supposed to tell the story of what transpired to become SW4-6, I cannot not employ some brain cells... so I'm just throwing up my hands in disgust and impatience at the whole thing... it just lurches most unbecomingly from point to point with all the finesse of Han Solo trying his lines on Leia. Maybe someday I will manage to watch them in their entirety... by which time I expect to have clocked much more end-to-end ME film rewatching time. Yeah, it will just be a chore to be finished with that lot but it's on my bucket list, right near the scrapy bottom

Just the way it was described though - '"We've come to tell you payment of your debt has been offered… and accepted." oozes Pace onscreen.' The way this is phrased hints at something else/more? Offered what in payment, to whom (I suppose the payment is the 1/14 share of the treasure. But still, so intriguing!)? Isn't it enough for Bard and Thranduil to decide between themselves? Is there a Lake-town restitution committee in tow? I don't think Thorin took it well to have whatever it is described as his debt. Payment is probably an anger-management trigger word too. Is Thranduil riling him up? And is this where Thorin rudely fires that arrow?

So who do you think it is? Seems like with the new information, it might just be narrowed down to the leaders of the combined hosts after all.
