I think they are approaching more from a bottom line point of view: that is they know it's pretty much guaranteed to make money. So they aren't going all out in marketing etc. as they don't need to to make is successful. Still. It's not as much fun for me. I enjoyed the hype, the promos, the fan involvement, the cards, the statues, all of the paraphernalia and banners, signs all over the online community at the time of LOTR. Not so much this time. I get it from a business point of view. It is risky and could backfire on them (I doubt it though) but it's pretty lackluster. They will probably ramp up in November I suspect and again, I'll enjoy it then. It's just not as much of an event this time around and the anticipation for me just isn't the same.

that Azog has the ability to turn himself into a baby hamster. It is a mystery as to why he failed to use that special power against Gandalf!

My immediate reaction and thought was that Azog doesn't have physical magical powers, but maybe he conjures some internal strength - one last oomph to destroy the Heirs of Durin. Very much like how Gandalf the White rode tirelessly for aid, bolstered the morale of the troops, and brought courage to those around him (Aragorn, Theoden, Faramir) - he didn't use his magic. Maybe this "power" is in numbers (an army), rather than anything physical about himself. Which might suggest that Azog marches to Erebor. Does Bolg die in Dol Guldur which causes an outburst?

I have a feeling, if there is any truth to the Azog rumor

Is that the "magic" that he conjures is being misinterpreted. It's like the Necromancer "Cloud" if anything. I wonder how the Necromancer will factor into this. i highly doubt he's just going to whisp on southward after the defeat at Dol Guldur. But at the same time, it's hard to picture that "cloud" in the BOTFA. Who knows.

cheapens it to me. the art of what has been/is being created is clouded by ads, billboards, headlines etc....takes away from the beauty of it. We're still getting the movies, the music, the beautiful behind the scenes videos, books etc...and the unmatched art and figurines etc from Weta... I must say that I disagree and am totally fine not to be desensitized to the whole thing by the time I see the movie.

You're all absolutely on the bleeding edge of film spoilers. You almost certainly know more than I do, and I'm putting 40 hours a week into TORn right now (yay, a second, unpaid job). I think it's a bit much to expect the panel to reveal anything that's new for you. Why? If we had that information, we wouldn't hoard it -- it'd be on the frontpage lickety split. However, for many casual readers/viewers/attendees who don't live and breathe film spoilers, there may well have been a surprise or three in what was discussed. And that is the audience for these panels. Fact is, spy news (reliable OR otherwise) has been very hard to come by for The Hobbit. It's a very different situation to Lord of the Rings where spy reports were commonplace. But -- and I know there are folks who drop by here who are involved in the film -- if anyone wants to drop us some plot details, spymaster@theonering.net is always open.

I could've unveiled some goodies. I haven't been completely forthcoming with you guys, Dem. I actually have a very reliable source of information regarding the plot of film 3. So... who wants to know who kills the dragon?
"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that." - Viggo Mortensen

IMO it wasn't FUN, tho either. I'm all for dark humor but *meh*. Also re that type of panel, addressing a wide variety of fans of all ages and opinions isn't the place for your OWN opinions. Because you're not PJ or his rep. And the audience didn't seem all that engaged. Then there seemed to be panel folks that actually said nothing???? And in the snark department, so is whoever described Thranduil as "one-note" going to go up to PJ now - or Lee Pace - and discuss that? That was uncool - and in MY opinion, so wrong, as IMO Thranduil made an incredible impact and captured people's imaginations round the world with relatively little screen time. Could write several pages about the Aragorn/Thorin remarks, the Thranduil remarks, etc. Anyway IMO that panel could have been all of us sitting around in a bar. But thanks for the panel tips, 'coz I'm thinking of Dragon Con, or NY Con. Maybe. Just read an article tho that thanks to growing popularity the NY Con is having similar problems to SDCC and you get nickle and dimed to death - but hey, it's NY so I'd expect that there. Sorry if my posts are so negative but yah know, it's the last movie, and I'm so enthusiastic about the Hobbit movies myself - just re-watched AUJ and there's just so much richness in these films, so much that IMO could just be celebrated, which is what I was expecting I guess from a Hobbit panel.

I hear so much about the Lotr promotion and feel a little sad I don't get see that because it was before my time. I only fell in love with Lotr four years ago.
