Peter Jackson likely to direct 'Doctor Who'

In an interview with SFX magazine, 'Doctor Who' showrunner Steven Moffat stated that Peter Jackson is still in the running to direct a future episode of the long running sci-fi series. "I think it will probably happen at some point. I mean, he can do what the hell he likes - he owns New Zealand! I think he's sincere in his 'Doctor Who" fandom, to say the least. He's a nice guy, he quite often drops me a line after a show goes out. He's into it .. it's just 'Can you make it work?' I think he would also like us to go and make it in New Zealand! And I'm like Okaaay - I'd rather we just flew you to Cardiff!" You can read the full interview over at SFX.

Fly Peter Jackson to Cardiff? One of the draws of having PJ direct is filming it in NZ - which, by the way, PJ does not own. I already didn't like Steven Moffat, and this interview has only cemented my opinion that he's rude and arrogant. To be honest, I hope Peter doesn't direct Doctor Who until Moffat has left the show.

As a NZ resident I find this offensive and patronising.

and I agree with other posters about the inappropriateness of Moffatt's comments. I don't think I'd call it 'arrogance' though; rather, Moffatt reminds me of a child who has had too many toys for too long and has forgotten the sheer creativity and satisfaction of making do with what's available. And I dearly wish his appreciation of women would grow beyond his 'type' - the River Songs and Irene Adlers of his world grate on the nerves!

But then I'm a fan of comic hyperbole.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Saurons master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. But I suppose he has to fund his movies somehow. :D

I don't think his comment was to be taken literally.

I'll agree that it was comic hyperbole. Jackson is the biggest name one can think of when it comes to New Zealand and the film industry, and I think that's what was meant here.

Think Moffatts comments were meant simply to be funny and play into what many have as the impression of the NZ movie scene. I'd love to see PJ's take on the Doctor, also wonder if he would have his team write the episode. Some of my favorite Who episodes are the ones by guest writers such as Neil Gaiman.

As a big Moffat / Jackson / and Doctor Who fan all rolled into one, this sounds great! And the he "owns New Zealand" was a joke - and a pretty funny one, too! :-)
