I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

I love these films but they're not The Lord of the Rings but I feel that same way about the books as well. That all being said that moment IMO would have to go high on a list if you were making scenes that had that special something. I totally am with you on the music and its impact on someone when watching that scene.

Uhhh pretty simple [In reply to] Can't Post

Gandalf fears the ever-rising darkness, like Smaug and his neutrality and how it can benefit the enemy, and how creatures like trolls are coming down from the Ettenmoors to raid villages and destroy farms. Bilbo (and hobbits in general) show Gandalf the good and joy of the world, and how peaceful and carefree they are. I felt that line was pretty self explanatory, and didn't think anyone would question what Gandalf meant. Not bashing you in anyway, understand, just seems like you're nitpicking a pretty straightforward line? Crazy

Right. sorry. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's just that I (wrongly) thought that Gandalf didn't know about the growing darkness until long after he chose Bilbo. If that was the case the the courage logic wouldn't make any sense. But it apparently isn't.

I still think it's a good line to discuss here, you can sum up its meaning literally as you did, but it's fun also to look at other people's interpretations and opinions. Smile

.. [In reply to] Can't Post

I personally think the music ruins the scene, gives it too much of a "The Moral of the story is" feel.

Well I for one am deeply shocked [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, shocked and appalled at such wanton carelessness and reckless disregard for grammatical propriety. Elizabeth is right, it's a good thing this didn't happen in the Reading Room - that kind of thing can get you banned for life. You're very lucky the admins haven't shut off your account. I trust you'll be much more careful next time.

Understandable [In reply to] Can't Post

Again, tried not to come off as rude, and basically that's what Gandalf meant: in these ever-growing dark times Bilbo gives him courage. But as you said, it is an interesting quote to talk about.

That's what I love about the films as well. How they expand on the characters, give them more depth.
