Unbelievably, I've just heard MF interviewed about this on the radio this morning! [In reply to] Can't Post

On the ClassicFM news report this morning he categorically denied there had been any disruptions from any audience during the run so far, and is at a loss as to how the rumours started in the first place.

Interview [In reply to] Can't Post

In an interview I saw with Martin Freeman he said that in Shakespeare's time audiences were also bawdy (or words to that effect). This was indeed the case, but it doesn't make me want to see productions that feature such behaviour today – and a lot of other, to me undesirable, things went on in theatres during Shakespeare's time, such as people throwing stuff around and fighting, bair baiting, and so on. The stench must also have been terrible.

I saw David Tenant in Richard II last year, and found that this (acclaimed!) production left me cold. To me much of it featured ham acting, apart from in the case of a couple of actors; the characters were also really modern, too young and PC, and unlike anyone who would have lived in Shakespeare's day. I am now very wary of going to plays featuring celebrities (generally dislike the celebrity culture, which to me embraces such things as unmade beds, dead animals in tanks and so on). (I did love The Hollow Crown, with Tom Hiddlestone, though – it was a modern, unique interpretation of Shakespeare, but so well done.)

Anyway, completely OT, so now I'll stop spouting off.

Three cheers for The Hollow Crown! [In reply to] Can't Post

Off-topic, I know, but...yes!!! The BBC's Hollow Crown series was singly responsible for making me not resent being forced to pay the TV tax last year. Sensational stuff.

Richard II was my favourite; the production design was gorgeous and Ben Whishaw's portrayal of the titular monarch was one of the finest performances I have ever had the pleasure to witness in my entire life.

You'll be as excited as I am, then, to learn that there are four more coming: all three parts of Henry VI and Richard III (with Cumberbatch).

Oh, wow! [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't realise there were four more to come. (Good that we'll see Benedict Cumberbatch, but that Tom Hiddlestone was truly outstanding…)
