A friend of mine who has translated the EE said it adds stuff that makes the move feel more like Tolkien. He's a bit of a purist so if he feels that way then we should be getting some good stuff.

This line and its delivery bother me. The way Bilbo dissembled seemed awkward from Freeman, and I felt it diminished Gandalf and his powers of observation by his inability to observe the change in Bilbo's original intent for mentioning it and his body language, such as the hand fiddling in his pocket and the instant mood change. They could later show that Gandalf knew right away and was waiting for Bilbo to be truthful, but I think that unlikely. If anyone would like to see it in context, here ya go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFrmOsZwCP4
Now his life is full of wonder But his heart still knows some fear Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend Why they try to tear the mountains down To bring in a couple more More people, more scars upon the land

I don't think Gandalf can be fooled quite so easily

This scene reminds me of Gandalf's reply "Well, what does it matter? He's back!" to the dwarves' question how Bilbo got past the goblins when he clearly saw Bilbo slip something in his pocket in AUJ. I'm sure Gandalf knows there must be something more to it, but simply doesn't see the moment fit for a more thorough inquiry: he's in a hurry and so are Bilbo and the dwarves; whatever it is, it can wait. Or so he thinks. But courage is needed anyway, thus his line "Good. Well, that's good. You'll need it."

.... that Gandalf does know that Bilbo changed his mind and was about to say something quite different. Gandalf is aware that something is going on - we saw that before, in the scene Blackfox mentioned in AUJ. He senses something but doesn't know what. I think 'You're going to need it' is more of a put-down - along the lines of 'if you won't confide in me, deal with it yourself.' Doesn't seem to me that Gandalf is diminished by this at all. If Bilbo won't tell him freely, he's hardly going to use force.

I love the way that both McKellen and Martin handle this scene. Gandalf gets that something is up with Bilbo but has neither the time nor the inclination to pursue it right then. I think Emre43 made an excellent observation about courage there. I think that I was concentrating on Bilbo's dissembling rather than the words spoken so I'm glad to have it pointed out.

but chose not to pursue it. Gandalf has a way of giving people that "little push out of the door" and then letting them overcome obstacles and become as brave as they need to be. Although he does save the day sometimes, he seems to regard it as a last resort - he's definitely not a modern "helicopter parent"! It would be in character for Gandalf to notice that Bilbo was holding something back but to step back and just let Bilbo decide for himself if he wanted to talk about it.
And once again the world has not arranged itself just for me.

I can't believe I did not notice this, but I believe you are absolutely right! What a beautiful way to tie together AUJ with DOS--very subtle and well-done! What came to my mind immediately was Galadriel telling Pippin he would find his courage in FOTR. Which of course, could have been another allusion as well.
