It was the original Durin, especially, who lived to an extremely old age.

Doesn't he ride a boar / 'war pig' in the book anyway?

In the book, the Iron Hills dwarves marched at top speed to the Mountain on foot.

Do you think that longer lifespans of the ancestral dwarves had something to do with their creation at the hands of Aule, and that they "diminished" over time as the generations wore on?

Do you think that longer lifespans of the ancestral dwarves had something to do with their creation at the hands of Aule, and that they "diminished" over time as the generations wore on? Good question. How many of Thorin (II)'s direct ancestors died of old age? How many might have lived for many more decades if they had not been killed prematurely?

Is Thorin a more direct descendant of Durin the Deathless?

Balin is not less direct descendant of Durin the Deathless, but Balin looks older.

Balin is not less direct descendant of Durin the Deathless, but Balin looks older. Yes, Thorin should look as old or older than Balin and Dwalin, but for the films the desire was to have a Thorin who looked like he could still sire an heir.
