I've seen book illustrations that I've liked less.

It feels as if I am there with the dwarves. It's a good moment just before Smaug crashes into Lake-town, and another winged creature is ready to give the news.

There is so much feeling and energy in this illustration. It makes me feel their elation, mixed with a bit of disbelief 'can it be true' type of feeling in their expressions, all mixed up together at the unexpectedly wonderful news. And all are slightly different, making it so like a collection of individuals, not just figures. And the best is the dwarf in front - is that Balin? - and his gesture of outstretched arms towards Roac. Perfect touch :).
