... has something to do with Tolkien's arguable propensity for revision, for example. Or maybe you mean it changed by the time Bilbo arrived 'back again' from 'there'... which might be due to someone tasked with cleaning Bilbo's house while he was away.

Or something. Hey I can't think of everything!
