As many times as I've read LotR (and that's lots) it never registered that there wasn't a farewell dialogue between Aragorn and Elrond. There had to be some "shadow" that still lie on Elrond's heart. It's hard to imagine the grief at Arwen and Elrond's parting.

One of the great relationships in the book.

I love the complexity of the relationship between Aragorn and Elrond. I don't think Elrond ever stopped loving Aragorn, but he had an agonizing separation when his daughter chose to become mortal, and his relationship with Arwen spanned thousands of years. Elrond only knew Aragorn for a very short time in comparison.

The grief would indeed be unimaginable, I talked a little bit about it in my Arwen essay. Thanks again!

Not only did his relationship with Arwen span thousands of years, but he also thought he would have her forever. With Aragorn, he knew from the beginning that he would die one day. Thanks again for the response.
