Screencap of the Day: "The action of the tiger"

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our English dead. In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility: But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage; -Henry V, Act III, scene 1 Original image is here. This image is always striking to me because as Aragorn charges into certain death, the first ones to follow are not his brothers the Men of Gondor and Rohan, nor his close friends Gimli and Legolas, nor even his old friend and mentor Gandalf. The two who follow him without a moment of hesitation are Merry and Pippin. 1. This image always elicited a big laugh from the audience. What did you think when you first saw this? 2. Do you think they are charging out of loyalty for Frodo or out of loyalty for Aragorn? Some previous scenes: Original image is here. “I’ll have you Longshanks!” Original image is here. "We have no choice but to trust him." 2. In light of the above two scenes of suspicion, hostility, and reluctance, do you like how the hobbits' relationship with Aragorn evolved? Would you have preferred that they had liked and trusted Strider right off? Original image is here. "My friends..." 3. How did you feel when Aragorn called them "My friends"? Did you believe it? 4. Some felt this scene should have been for Frodo and Sam alone. Given the previous scene of the charge at the Morannon, do you agree? 5. Any other thoughts or comments?
****************************************** The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

1: When I first saw it? I don`t think i remember it, I believe I was mostly smiling and then laugh when the army is running pass them. But now it`s... No idea how to call, but in the start they would rather stay in the Shire, where it is comfort, food, and now they are the first one to run after Aragorn. They know what they have to do, and I dont think they will ever hesitate to do it again. 2: I do think both, but mostly for they have to do it for Frodo. 2: I don`t think I would trusted Strider if I met on him in Bree, so i think it is completely natural that they dont trust him then, beside didn`t he just take Frodo from them? xD 3: Yeah, I believed him. They have after all travelled with him for months xD 4: No, I don`t agree with them. I do think they all four deserved it, I mean they all after all left the safety of the Shire, going on a dangerous journey and risking their lives when they could be home.

1. This image always elicited a big laugh from the audience. What did you think when you first saw this? - Lump in my throat. A silent cheer! 2a. Do you think they are charging out of loyalty for Frodo or out of loyalty for Aragorn? - Aragorn is friend and more: he's been a comrade-in-arms, a captain they know they can trust. They've watched him charge into danger before and fought next to him at Weathertop and Moria. They know they're there to give Frodo time. They have a very personal reason to be there, and Aragorn's final "For Frodo" matches exactly what they are geared up to do. No need for thought, they're running on instinct and love now - for Frodo and Aragorn and the Shire. 2b. In light of the above two scenes of suspicion, hostility, and reluctance, do you like how the hobbits' relationship with Aragorn evolved? Would you have preferred that they had liked and trusted Strider right off? - How could they have trusted Aragorn straight off? They were strangers in a strange land, half the size of everyone they met, chased by evil creatures bent on murder, and their friend is apparently abducted by "one of them rangers", dirty, dark and menacing. I loved watching their trust, interdependence and affection grow naturally through shared experiences. 3. How did you feel when Aragorn called them "My friends"? Did you believe it? 4. Some felt this scene should have been for Frodo and Sam alone. Given the previous scene of the charge at the Morannon, do you agree? -Yes, friends for life. Tolkien knew about war time friendships and how deeply private they could be. Jackson has Aragorn bring that private affection forward to be acknowledged to others, to let others know how much he valued them all and how much was owed to these Periannath princelings. "My friends, you bow to no one." (Another lump in my throat.) 5. Any other thoughts or comments? - Thank you for reminding me what I loved about LOTR. In The Hobbit films we're seeing the strong relationships among the dwarves, and there's been a - very - slow growth of respect and affection between Bilbo and some of them. By the end of the final test, each will know the value of all the others, and those who survive will share a bond similar to that of the Fellowship. Now there's a worthy foreshadowing and no mistake.

My abiding memory of that scene is how badly the lighting on the hobbits and compositing is! One of a few, albeit rare, compositing blips throughout the trilogy that always bugs me when re-watching it.
