lindwen is from the "lost letters" of 1918-1937. years ago, i was at an estate sale in some dusty corner of new england. the house was in the country, set far back from the road, and was in serious disrepair. the place was full of yesteryear flotsam and jetsam.... steamer trunks, spats, sugar tongs, odd pieces of limoge, fans encrusted with sequins and lace. in an old shoe travel trunk (a suitcase devoted entirely to porting shoes from one locale to another), i found dozens and dozens of letters stuffed into the little shoe cubby holes, like mail from a post office frozen in time. i really wanted the shoe travel trunk (i had not seen one before) and didn't think much of the letters at first. the shoe trunk was $20, i peeled off a bill, and jauntily carried my prize to my car. that evening, cleaning the shoe trunk out, i discovered --- incredible -- letter upon letter from j.r.r. tolkien. i could not believe it!! a treasure of references to characters and places and detail that were obviously earlier versions, more complete versions of the silmarillion. sometimes even whole, quoted passages. i put the letters in chronological order, and logged them in a ledger, giving them their own, unique number. letter #22-05-28.2 (he wrote 2 letters on may 28, 1922) presents a clear character sketch of lindwen. this was from a brief correspondence with caviglia, a noted opera singer at the time. he based lindwen, an amazon elf-type who is also highly sensitive and sings, on her. this brief correspondence ended when caviglia was murdered by jasper ankle, an obsessed fan (who was also, incidentally, encrusted with sequins and lace). cheers -- .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

D**n him to h**l! Excuse my language. This revelation is extremely upsetting.

i thought caviglia's demise was well-known (well, it is to opera fans). but -- clearly -- but for jasper ankle, the corrspondence between tolkien and caviglia would have continued, fleshing out lindwen so she could take a prominent role in the sil (she led her own noldor contingent out of valinor). but (i'm inferring from what i've read of the shoe trunk correspondence) tolkien was quite bereft over the death of caviglia, and set aside lindwen from inclusion in the sil. but there are +reams+ of letters that mention her. cheers -- .

So, just to distract me from my woe, what has your research into the Trunk Letters revealed on the subject of balrog wings?

Well, I consider it my duty as a self-proclaimed representative of the foxes of Middle-earth. And while I could promise to be less annoying in the future, I won't, as I'm not likely to change. At least not for the better.

When he faced them on Weathertop, there were four or five. Still, a great feat to take on four or five, and the WK was among them.

I always thought he would be a good addition. Would anyone have suspected him of wanting to wield the ring? Also, he was one of the most powerful beings in Middle Earth. I could easily see him taking on one of the Nazgul...

Beorn was dead by the time of LOTR, was he not?

During the feast in Rivendell, it was said that Beorn's son Grimbeorn ruled the Beornings and kept the High Pass open. So I would assume that Beorn was dead by then, but Gloin did refer to him in the past tense. Having Grimbeorn in the Fellowship would have kept with the "Hobbit: Next Generation" makeup of the Fellowship (Frodo heir of Bilbo, Legolas son of the Elvenking, Gimli son of Gloin)

Gandalf speaking: (Bk II Ch 2) "At sunrise I escaped and fled towards the north. I could not hope to do more. It was impossible to find you, Frodo, in the wilderness, and it would have been folly to try with all the Nine at my heels." (My bold). There are other references that I don't have time to look up.. You may be thinking of the Flight to the Ford where there were only 5? Cheers

I am thinking about Aragorn and the Hobbits atop Weathertop when five of the Nine attacked Frodo and he was stabbed with the Morgul blade. The night before, Aragorn/Strider and the Hobbits saw the lightning on Weathertop and that was Gandalf battling the Nine. So I made a mistake there.
