A most epic Readthrough

Every day for about two and a half years, this blogger copy-typed one page of Lord of the Rings and then wrote about that page. He's a careful reader, with good observations. http://iampierremenard.wordpress.com/
~~~~~~ "… ever let your aim be to come at truth, not to conquer your opponent. So you never shall be at a loss in losing the argument, and gaining a new discovery.” Arthur Martine "nowimë I am in the West, Furincurunir to the Dwarves (or at least, to their best friend) and by other names in other lands. Mostly they just say 'Oh no it's him - look busy!' " Or "Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"
I love LOTR more than words can really express, but the thought of cracking it open every day for over two years fills me with dread. I was actually shocked when he said in his last post that he would like to read it again at his own pace. Good for him!
"It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." Gandalf, "The Last Debate."
His treatment of the songs is well worth a mention
When songs come up, he performs them, singing and playing a ukulele or sometimes another instrument, using a popular tune. The results can be pretty interesting. You might expect that this is being done as humorous parody, but I think more than that is at work - some of these work pretty well for me, & I honour his creativity and audacity in doing this.. Here's "The Road Goes Ever On" Bilbo's version from Ch1, to the tune of Little Lion Man – Mumford & Sons http://soundcloud.com/...e-hobbit-man/s-iE9wO Tom Bombadil banishing the Barrow Wight to Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice https://soundcloud.com/...s/wights-wights-baby Here's the Ent's marching Song, to the tune of We Will Rock You - Queen https://soundcloud.com/...s-will-rock-you-pt-2 Oh, and The Elf Days Are Over (as per Florence and the Machine) https://soundcloud.com/...f-days-are-over-pt-1 See what I mean - a more complex artistic response than mere mockery. The collection of songs is here if you are too impatient to root around in the posts to find them: https://soundcloud.com/dbthomases/ His one-page-a-day policy extended to the songs too, so the longer ones are broken into sections (for example a song which is set over 3 pages of book will be in 3 segments).
It's amazing what some people do to add on to Tolkien's creativity. I feel like the Professor would have appreciated this guy's works, more so than a lot of other fan art that has been created. I'm sure he would have been annoyed at applying his songs to popular tunes, but I think he still would have respected it.
