The Battle of Five Armies in real life?
|
Can't Post

So I was just thinking about Tolkien's inspirations and began wondering. Is the Battle of Five Armies based on anything, inspired by something or supposed to represent something in real life? I don't know a lot about historical wars, so I was wondering if anything like this ever happened? If not could the "five armies" be perhaps a metaphor for say, five countries that were once in conflict or something similar? I'm fascinated by wars, just not very educated in them, so I look forward to any response however relevant. Thanks! QT

..This paper from an old Tolkien Amateur Symposium, and the discussion which follows http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=628998#628998 The link leads to several papers - you want "The Battle of Five Armies: An Analysis", by Arandir . In the discussion that followed (which you can also read by following the shortcut) there is also discussion about whether the tactical situation resembled the battle of Agincourt.
~~~~~~ "… ever let your aim be to come at truth, not to conquer your opponent. So you never shall be at a loss in losing the argument, and gaining a new discovery.” Arthur Martine "nowimë I am in the West, Furincurunir to the Dwarves (or at least, to their best friend) and by other names in other lands. Mostly they just say 'Oh no it's him - look busy!' " Or "Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"
