The Battle of Five Armies in real life? Can't Post

So I was just thinking about Tolkien's inspirations and began wondering. Is the Battle of Five Armies based on anything, inspired by something or supposed to represent something in real life?

I don't know a lot about historical wars, so I was wondering if anything like this ever happened?

If not could the "five armies" be perhaps a metaphor for say, five countries that were once in conflict or something similar?

I'm fascinated by wars, just not very educated in them, so I look forward to any response however relevant.

Thanks! QT Smile

The link leads to several papers - you want "The Battle of Five Armies: An Analysis", by Arandir . In the discussion that followed (which you can also read by following the shortcut) there is also discussion about whether the tactical situation resembled the battle of Agincourt.
